1. Lazy Thieves
Most criminal robbers can be put in this category. And its pretty easy to protect yourself against them.
Often these are street kids just lingering around all day, waiting for an easy opportunity to steal some small stuff.
They are looking for cash, cell phones and other small stuff they can sell easily.
So they will not be after your credit card or passport, because it’s hard to sell them without having a connection to a criminal organization.
How can we fight them?
Having awareness of your surroundings, seeming like you know what you are doing, will often be enough, that the street kids will not want to have anything to do with you.
Because they look at you and think, “Oh, I’ll take the next "stupid tourist", this one seems aware of what’s going on”.
And this is the great thing for you, unfortunately there are many “stupid tourists” around, that are waaay easier targets than you are, if you know this tip.

2. Cheeky Thieves
These are criminals that don't have to fear the consequences of their own police or community and act coldblooded by pulling your purse away or ripping you cellphone out of your hands.
They typically run away after a couple of seconds trying getting your stuff.
You will only see these types of criminals in areas where crime is very high and tolerated by the own community.
So the easiest way to avoid these criminals, is to avoid these areas.
If you have to go in an area like this you can defend yourself against these robbers by again use the Traveling Silverback Valuables Protection System (TSVPS) to hide your stuff.
Also don’t take your cellphone out if you notice the area you are in is unsafe.
Holding on to your stuff, if somebody tries to rip it away from you, can be successful as well. But be aware that if they are aggressive it can get dangerous, so decide for yourself.

3. Clever Thieves
These are mostly muggers who often work in teams.
The technique is bumping in to you or being very fast so you don't notice them.
The Traveling Silverback Valuables Protection System (TSVPS) will help a lot because all your valuables are very near to your body and hard to get away from you.
But the best thing you can protect yourself against these thieves, is not to flash your stuff.
These thieves are clever and think about risk and reward.
You can higher the risk for them by being aware of your surroundings, so you seem a harder option than many of your fellow “stupid tourists” who are easier target.
And you can lower the reward by not showing your bling, so don’t wear shiny watches, big necklaces and bling bling earrings.
Don’t carry a big wallet, even if the wallet has only coupons in it and no cash. For these people a big/fat wallet means a lot of money.
