If you look at the statistics crime is higher in Puerto Rico than in other big US cities. So that’s why you should always keep a sense of your surroundings.
Especially avoid bad neighborhoods like la Perla or some housing project areas which are all over San Juan and Ponce. Violent crime against tourists is very rare, most crime is drug related.
The main problem is theft.
Don’t travel at night. If you have to and you enter a red light, just carefully pass it with ignoring the red light.
Police will most likely tolerate it because of the risk of carjacking.
