Vieques Bioluminiscent Bay (Mosquito Bay)
A must do, even if it’s not around the corner.
A magical and amazing experience.
This is the best remaining Bioluminescent bay in the world.
One Day Trip From PR?
As far as I know, there is no possibility to make the trip in one day (In the past there was a catamaran tour, but this is closed now).
So you have to stay overnight. Stay in the south of the island it’s more beautiful than the north.
Bioluminescence is a phenomenon where an alga who, when contacted by anything moving, starts to glow blue for a couple of second.
The bays nickname is Mosquito Bay, and it's for a reason. It’s highly recommended to use Mosquito repellant and you have to use this special one who will not harm the sensitive environment of the Bio Bay.
You can ask your guide or bus driver, if you’re lucky they give it for free otherwise it’s about 10$.
You cannot go by yourself you have to buy a tour ticket 65$ (+10$ for special tested Mosquito repellant).
You will be picked up at a parking lot (See map) and will be driven with a bus to the BioBay. It’s a bumpy road.
Then you will kayak (two person per Kayak) in to the bay where you can start see the water glowing.
You can also see the fishes moving because they appear blue, as soon as they move in the water.
You can reach in the water and let the it run down your hand, so you see your hand and forearm sparkle with the BioBay water. Even the a look at the stars is amazing, if it's a clear night and can see them.
Try to get there on new moon, so you can see the glowing better. Make sure to pre book your ticket because places are rare. There are no photos allowed so lave your camera at home.
You can book a tour via Trip Advisor. Make sure to book the tour as soon as you can, because tickets can be rare. Many offer tours from 10PM and 11PM. I recommend booking the first tour, the night will not get darker if you book the second tour.
